Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a specialized, evidence-based form of cognitive-behavioral therapy developed to help individuals who experience intense emotions, difficulty managing relationships, and challenges with distress tolerance. Originally designed to treat borderline personality disorder, DBT has since proven highly effective for a wide range of mental health conditions.

DBT combines the need for acceptance with the need for change, providing clients with practical tools to regulate emotions, cope with stress, and foster more fulfilling relationships. The therapy is structured and skills-based, making it especially useful for individuals who feel overwhelmed by their emotions or struggle with impulsive behaviors.

DBT is effective for individuals dealing with:

  • Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

  • Chronic suicidal thoughts or self-harming behaviors

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Eating disorders

  • Substance use issues

  • Mood dysregulation and emotional instability

Core DBT skill areas include:

  • Mindfulness – cultivating present-moment awareness and nonjudgmental acceptance

  • Distress Tolerance – learning to survive crises without making things worse

  • Emotion Regulation – understanding and managing intense emotional experiences

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness – building and maintaining healthy relationships while respecting personal boundaries and the needs of others

Benefits of DBT include:

  • Increased emotional stability

  • Reduction in self-destructive behaviors

  • Improved communication and relationship skills

  • Greater resilience in the face of stress

  • Enhanced ability to live in the present moment

  • A more balanced and fulfilling life
