Support Group Session

Peer Support Specialist (PSS)

A Peer Support Specialist (PSS) is a trained professional who uses their lived experience with mental health challenges, substance use recovery, or both to support others going through similar experiences. They act as a bridge between clients and professional services, offering hope, guidance, and encouragement from the perspective of someone who has “been there.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Support & Mentorship: Help individuals set recovery goals, build coping skills, and find community resources.

  • Advocacy: Encourage self-advocacy and help clients navigate systems like healthcare, housing, or employment.

  • Role Modeling: Demonstrate recovery is possible by sharing personal experiences appropriately.

  • Crisis Support: Provide emotional support during difficult times (not the same as clinical intervention).

  • Connection Building: Reduce isolation by linking individuals with community support

Benefits of Peer Support

  • Builds trust more quickly since clients relate to lived experience

  • Encourages hope and resilience

  • Helps reduce stigma around mental health and addiction

  • Complements clinical treatment with real-world recovery support
